The Pros and Cons of Shower Door Options

March 12, 2025

When planning a bathroom remodel, one of the key decisions homeowners face is choosing the right shower door. The variety of options available can be overwhelming, but each type offers distinct advantages and potential drawbacks. As a trusted bathroom remodeling contractor serving Greater Boston and eastern Massachusetts, Bath Planet of Boston is here to help you make an informed decision tailored to your style, functionality, and budgetary needs.

Framed Shower Doors

Framed shower doors are a classic option, often chosen for their affordability and robust structure. These doors feature a metal frame, usually made of aluminum, which provides support and stability. The frames allow the use of thinner glass panels, reducing costs without sacrificing durability.

One of the biggest advantages of framed shower doors is their watertight seal, which minimizes leaks and keeps your bathroom dry. They are also relatively easy to install, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious homeowners.

However, framed shower doors may not suit every aesthetic. The visible metal frames can appear bulky and may clash with modern, minimalist designs. Over time, the frames may accumulate soap scum or mildew, requiring regular maintenance to keep them looking clean.

Frameless Shower Doors

For a sleek, contemporary look, frameless shower doors have become a favorite among homeowners in Greater Boston. These doors are made from thick, tempered glass that does not require a supporting frame. The result is an elegant, open look that can make even small bathrooms feel larger.

Frameless shower doors offer excellent customization options, allowing for various shapes, sizes, and hardware finishes. They are also easier to clean since there are fewer nooks and crannies where grime can accumulate.

On the downside, frameless doors are more expensive than their framed counterparts due to the thicker glass and precise installation requirements. While they are durable, the lack of a frame can make them more prone to slight movement over time, potentially compromising the seal and leading to water leakage.

Sliding Shower Doors

Sliding shower doors, also known as bypass doors, are a space-saving solution ideal for bathrooms with limited room. These doors glide along a track, eliminating the need for extra clearance for a door to swing open.

This type of door is particularly suited for bathtub-shower combos or shower stalls in compact bathrooms. Sliding doors often feature a seamless design that enhances the bathroom’s overall aesthetic.

However, the track mechanism can sometimes pose challenges. Dirt and debris can accumulate in the track, requiring diligent cleaning to ensure smooth operation. Additionally, sliding doors may limit accessibility, as the opening is typically narrower than other options, which could be a consideration for households with mobility concerns.

Hinged Shower Doors

Hinged shower doors, also called pivot doors, operate similarly to traditional doors by swinging outward or inward on hinges. These doors offer a classic and functional design that works well in spacious bathrooms where clearance is not an issue.

Hinged doors provide a wide opening for easy access, making them an excellent choice for homeowners prioritizing convenience. They also complement a variety of design styles, from traditional to modern.

However, hinged doors require adequate clearance to function properly, which can be a limitation in smaller bathrooms. Additionally, the outward swing may result in water dripping onto the bathroom floor, increasing the need for a well-placed bath mat or towel.

Bi-Fold Shower Doors

Bi-fold shower doors are a versatile option for those seeking a balance between accessibility and space-saving functionality. These doors fold inwards or outwards, making them a great choice for compact bathrooms without compromising entry width.

The folding mechanism allows bi-fold doors to accommodate unique shower layouts, including corner showers. They are also relatively affordable compared to frameless or hinged options.

Despite their advantages, bi-fold doors may have more moving parts, which could lead to wear and tear over time. Regular maintenance of the hinges and tracks is essential to ensure long-lasting performance.

Three great projects!

Ken L.
We had three projects just completed in our home. A shower replacement, a bathtub/shower replacement and an oversized bathtub converted to a large shower. Our installer was Matt Collins who did an outstanding job!! He was very skilled in the whole demolition and reconstruction process. We highly recommend Bath Planet and especially Matt Collins for a beautiful bathroom upgrade!!

Great Craftsmanship.

Donna N.
This was the best sales experience I’ve ever had. So very nice. Informative. So many options. I see value in every inch. You cannot beat the value and beauty of this anywhere.

FANTASTIC WORK!!!

Robert M.
Joel David & Jackson did an Excellent professional job of installing New Acrylic Shower with bench & 3 Grab Bars. They lowered the entrance way by 4 inches and opened the doorway by 6 inches, making it much more “user friendly”. Both were very skilled and did an excellent job of high craftsmanship. Installed a new shower head and faucet to complete the job.
