How to Choose the Right Lighting for Your New Bathroom

September 17, 2024

When remodeling your bathroom, lighting is a crucial element that can significantly impact the overall look, feel, and functionality of the space. Proper lighting not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your new bathroom but also ensures that you have adequate illumination for various tasks, such as applying makeup, shaving, or reading. Let’s look at some key factors to consider when selecting the perfect lighting for your newly remodeled bathroom.

Understand the Different Types of Bathroom Lighting

There are three main types of lighting to consider for your bathroom: ambient, task, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting provides overall illumination and sets the mood in the room. This can be achieved through ceiling-mounted fixtures, chandeliers, or wall sconces. Task lighting is focused on specific areas where you perform daily grooming tasks, such as the vanity area or shower. Vanity lights, pendant lights, or wall-mounted fixtures can provide targeted task lighting. Accent lighting is used to highlight specific features or decor elements in your bathroom, such as a beautiful tile design or a piece of artwork. Recessed spotlights or strip lights are often used for accent lighting.

Consider the Size and Layout of Your Bathroom

The size and layout of your bathroom will influence your lighting choices. In a small bathroom, you may opt for space-saving fixtures like wall sconces or recessed lights to avoid overwhelming the space. For larger bathrooms, you have more flexibility to incorporate a combination of lighting types and create a layered lighting design. Consider the placement of your fixtures in relation to the room’s layout, ensuring that you have sufficient lighting where it’s needed most.

Choose the Right Color Temperature

The color temperature of your bathroom lighting can greatly affect the ambiance and functionality of the space. Color temperature is measured in Kelvins (K), with lower numbers indicating warmer, more yellow tones and higher numbers representing cooler, bluer tones. For a bathroom, aim for a color temperature between 2700K and 3000K, which provides a warm and inviting atmosphere while still offering accurate color rendering for grooming tasks. If you prefer a more modern and crisp look, you can opt for a slightly higher color temperature, around 3500K to 4000K.

Ensure Adequate Lighting for Grooming Tasks

One of the primary functions of bathroom lighting is to facilitate grooming tasks. Ensure that your vanity area has sufficient task lighting to prevent shadows on your face while applying makeup or shaving. Wall-mounted fixtures or pendant lights on either side of the mirror are ideal for this purpose. If you have a larger vanity, consider adding a fixture above the mirror as well. In the shower or bathtub area, make sure you have a waterproof fixture that provides ample light for safe navigation and relaxation.

Don’t Forget About Natural Light

Whenever possible, incorporate natural light into your bathroom design. Natural light not only enhances the overall ambiance but also helps to reduce energy consumption during the daytime. If you have a window in your bathroom, consider positioning your vanity area nearby to take advantage of the natural light. If privacy is a concern, opt for frosted glass or window treatments that allow light to filter through while maintaining privacy.

Select Fixtures That Complement Your Bathroom Style

Your lighting fixtures should complement the overall style and design of your newly remodeled bathroom. Whether you’re going for a modern, minimalist look or a more traditional, elegant aesthetic, choose fixtures that align with your desired style. Consider finishes that match or contrast with your bathroom hardware, such as faucets and towel bars, to create a cohesive look.

Prioritize Energy Efficiency

When selecting your bathroom lighting fixtures, prioritize energy efficiency to save on your electricity bills and reduce your environmental impact. LED lights are an excellent choice as they consume less energy, have a longer lifespan, and emit less heat compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. Look for fixtures with ENERGY STAR certifications, which guarantee superior energy efficiency and performance.

Three great projects!

Ken L.
We had three projects just completed in our home. A shower replacement, a bathtub/shower replacement and an oversized bathtub converted to a large shower. Our installer was Matt Collins who did an outstanding job!! He was very skilled in the whole demolition and reconstruction process. We highly recommend Bath Planet and especially Matt Collins for a beautiful bathroom upgrade!!

Great Craftsmanship.

Donna N.
This was the best sales experience I’ve ever had. So very nice. Informative. So many options. I see value in every inch. You cannot beat the value and beauty of this anywhere.

FANTASTIC WORK!!!

Robert M.
Joel David & Jackson did an Excellent professional job of installing New Acrylic Shower with bench & 3 Grab Bars. They lowered the entrance way by 4 inches and opened the doorway by 6 inches, making it much more “user friendly”. Both were very skilled and did an excellent job of high craftsmanship. Installed a new shower head and faucet to complete the job.
